Scholarships

The Visual Artists' Alliance of Maryland, founded in 1993 as The Howard County Art Guild, was formed by a group of local artists exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. VAAM's annual scholarship program for local high school art students is an important part of its mission to advance and maintain high standards in the arts.

Scholarships are awarded each year to deserving Howard County high school art students in a program coordinated with the Howard County Board of Education. Students are chosen by the Board of Education based on criteria provided by VAAM. VAAM requires that the students demonstrate need, ability and a high level of academic achievement in art. The scholarships are awarded to students who wish to pursue a college degree with a major in art or art education.

Students are eligible for scholarship awards in their junior or senior year of high school. Juniors are awarded scholarships to attend summer art programs at accredited colleges and universities for a college-level experience in art education. Seniors are eligible for a tuition scholarship toward their first year of study at an accredited college or university in the field of fine art, graphic arts, art education or a related field. In recent years, we have chosen to direct the program toward juniors as the funding we have available allows us to offer them an opportunity of the greatest significance.
